Gadget Canes are among the most popular three types of canes and often referred to as System Canes. There are also decorative and fold art canes but the gadget canes seem to be the most requested stick on the market.

Why the high demand for gadget canes? People have always been intrigued with gadgets, and canes are no exception! There are thousands of Gadget canes that you can choose from and new ones are being developed all the time, but it’s the antique canes that will put a dent in your pocket book!

System Canes

These dual purpose canes have been around for a long time and folk lore tells a tale of two Persian monks who used these gadget canes to smuggle silkworm larvae out of China.

Antique gadget canes are very difficult to find in good condition. Too often, these types of canes were for the privileged and limited in number. Finding a gadget cane in its original state is very difficult and too often, such canes have been refurbished with parts from a different era.

Some of the most popular gadget canes are ‘sword canes’ which can easily be converted into a weapon for self defense.

Types of Gadget Canes

Gadget canes can be broken down into four categories; these categories center around the function of the cane:

  • Professional canes – these canes were designed for professionals such as doctors (Doctor Canes) who wanted to carry a small assortment of medical supplies or tools. Another example is the horse auctioneer who uses his gadget cane to measure a horse.
  • City canes – these gadget canes were considered to be fashionable and included items such as cigarettes, opera glasses, pipes. Some of these dual purpose canes were even designed to be used as musical instruments such as the violin cane which contained a bow hidden within the shaft of the gadget cane. These types of dual purpose cane are some of the most expensive.
  • Sword canes – these types of canes contained items such as daggers, swords, guns and more and are truly unique.
  • Outdoor Canes – Gadget canes that include bird watching tools, fishing equipment, games and even whiskey flasks.

The best way to value a gadget cane is by the dual purpose function, such as a sword cane or doctor’s cane. It’s extremely important that the cane be intact with all the original parts and in working order. There is an exception to this rule as some canes, such as the gun cane, may not have the original ammunition (which you wouldn’t want laying around anyway!).

With the general overview of the gadget cane in mind, you are now ready to narrow your search to either price or function. Shop wisely, make sure everything is original and most important, enjoy the experience that is cane collecting!
