Gun Canes

Gun canes are one of the most popular gadgets an antique collector can have in his or her cane collection.

Not only is the gun cane popular, but at a recent cane auction, a Remington gun cane firm 1875 sold for more than $10,000! The dog head of this gun cane was in an L share and classic gutta-percha design known of Remington.

Gun Cane
Gun canes are designed to look like a cane or walking stick and were extremely popular in the 1850′s. These types of gun canes served only as a way to scare away a predator and buy time to escape. Although some gun canes were designed with a pop-up scope, their accuracy was never very dependable.

John F Thomas is said to have designed the first gun cane (a percussion cane gun) and split his invention with Remington who is believed to have started mass production in 1960.

Cane Gun
Later, as other can guns were made, handles were designed in a variety of shapes, including ball and claw, variations of the dog head, full curve, curve with flat gripping area, bulbous-shape, and of course the L-shape.

Not many gun canes were made [Remington's percussion and the Thomas Patent Rim fire], in fact, less then 2,000 were produced over a twenty seven year period. It’s no wonder why these gun canes are so highly sought after by antique cane collectors around the world!

Unless they request I place their email on this comment, it is excluded – including it is a sure way to get spammed (bots crawl sites all the time looking for email addresses). If it’s not included, when the interested part requests contact, the system will email them the other person contact information and leave it up to them to contact or not.

In your case, you wanted you email placed on the comment, which is fine.

It’s an antique rhino horn handle gun cane. I’m not sure if it’s black power only or not.

    I believe it’s a 40 caliber.

If anyone knows more about the value or is interested in buying this, please leave a comment or email me directly at bopeauto (at) comcast.net

    Thanks,

Help Needed: I have a brass handled, 50 cal. percussion can gun bearing the Belgian proof mark used since 1810, but lacks the Script EL, so it is pre-1852. The pictures are shown below, simply click on them to see the enlarge version.

Can Gun Picture 1 of 3Can Gun Picture 2 of 3Can Gun Picture 3 of 3

The barrel is also marked “JAP” and “G”. Barrel, trigger and bar hammer are browned. The brass handle appears to be a sand casting. The Brass handle has neatly stamped “D. G. Whitiker” and the names of 4 others and a 1920 date very sloppily stamped.

My problem is that the tip of the hammer was missing when I got it. I welded on a crude end and used to shoot it ( #11 cap). Now I want to restore it but have no idea what the original hammer was like. HAS ANYONE SEEN A SIMILAR OLD CANE GUN THAT HAS A COMPLETE HAMMER?

  7. Jared says:

I have a cane that looks very much like Dana’s and Bret’s. The numbers on the other side of the loading tray are 36 and 7414. We think it came back from Europe in WW2, but it could have also come from Asia since my Grandfather served in both theaters. I haven’t noticed any other marks but I’ll look more closely. I’d be glad to hear from anyone who would like to tell me more about it.

  8. Cane Man says:

Hi Matthew, I’ll forward your email on to Bret and he can contact you from there about the cane.

  9. Matthew says:

Wondering if you could put me in contact with Bret who posted this gun cane for sale on the 22nd of November. I’m interested in discussing purchasing it from him.

  10. Roger says:

About 25 years ago I purchase a black power cane that can fire a single bullet in .36 or a shotgun load. It’s very well made, possibly built in the South in the 1930′s. it has a wooden handle and modern blued steel shaft. You load the bullet or lead shot (pre-packed) in the threaded breech and load the 3F powder in the handle striker mechanism. I’ve seen one other like it for sale on the internet for $3000. I was stunned because I purchased mine for $75. It can be easily produced. I’ve traveled all over the US and Canada with it and never been seized. But that was before (9-11). I’m thinking of selling or reproducing it. What do you think?

  11. jeff says:

    Cane Gun by KarlHi There,

I have a Dumonthier breach loading CG, i stumbled upon this when sorting through a deceased relatives possessions, having done a little research it would appear to be circa 1870 in date and a fairly desirable thing to own.

Due to gun laws in the U.K i don’t want to keep it nor do i want to butcher it by rendering it useless so i have taken the option to sell, please feel free to make an offer.

    Best regards

Because of this painfuul situation I can not walk well or quickly and feel that being an older female that I am very venerable and have a high risk probablility of getting robbed, hurt, attacked, etc. especially since I live in Miami, FL. I was hoping to find out if it is legal to use a cain/walking stick that can shoot bullets so I can defend myself should an unfortunate situation present itself. Also does one need a concealed wepon permit to walk/use it? This is not a problem because I have had a permit for the past 20+ years. I’m just wondering what the legalities are and how/where to purchase a good one. Anything anyone can relate to me would be greatly appreciated. JG

  36. Aaron says:

I have what is likely a W.H.Werner (patent #104087, June 7, 1870) underhammer muzzle-loading percussion cane gun. Patent drawings show minor improvements. Handle pulls back and folds down forming a shoulder stock and exposing the firing mechanism. A folding ramrod is stored in the muzzle. The browned steel shank forms the full-length barrel, about .410 caliber. The wood handle was replaced sometime in the past with a Remington-like doghead. Nipple was replaced & gun is in firing condition. Does anyone have information on these and maker?

This all original French .410 shotgun cane is a Dumonthier, whose gun canes are featured in Catherine Dike’s classic “Canes and Curiosa.” Similar gun canes are on pages 342-344 in Chapter 33 on “Breech-loading Firearms.” Celestin Dumonthier’s factory was located at Rue des Petits-Hotels 23, Sailleville, Oise, and he filed patents in England in as early as 1876.

    French 410 shotgun cane

    1870-1890 Dumonthier .410 cane gun 26″

With a crook horn handle and rosewood shaft, this breech-loading gun cane has the original silver ferrule and original patina. The mechanism is fully functional. The handle is 4-1/8 inches, with brass and engine-turned silver collar trimmings along the rosewood shaft. Overall length is 34-1/4 inches. Some wear consistent with age. Dumonthier’s gun canes are greatly sought after by weapon curiosa collectors. Dumonthier continued to operate in Paris up until the German occupation during World War II, when all its stock and documents were confiscated.

    Hello,

I Have recently found a 9mm gun cane in attic that used to belong to my wife’s grandfather it has a black what looks like ivory or bone handle has 9v/v marked on it will try and get a photo to put on the site.

9mm walking stick looks in reasonable condition

I believe it was used for poaching.

Hi Robin, Interested in your cane. Where in the great planet are you (approximately)? Have any photos of your cane? Thanks

  111. Robin says:

I have one with the full curve handle. Looks like it might have been made around 1865. There were two sets of numbers inside. Looking for a serious buyer.
